By BOB ANDERSON The Louisiana Supreme Court has ruled in favor of environmentalists and against Waste Management Inc. in a case involving Woodside Landfill’s air discharge permit, but the two sides differ on what the court’s action means. The company should not continue accepting waste at the landfill, now that its air discharge permit has been vacated, Jill Witkowski, acting director of the Tulane Environmental Law Clinic, said Friday. Waste Management maintains that it may legally operate while the state reviews an application for a revised permit, which has been submitted. “We believe it should close down,” said Marylee Orr of the Louisiana Environmental Action Network. “We’re anxious to see what DEQ is going to do.” |
