Wal-Mart to Stop Selling Cypress Mulch From Louisiana
Important Step Towards Preserving Endangered Cypress Swamps

BATON ROUGE, LA (September 5, 2007) – Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. has informed its suppliers that it will no longer buy or sell cypress mulch that is harvested, bagged, or manufactured in the state of Louisiana. The policy becomes effective Jan. 1, 2008.

LDEQ HEARING GIVES PUBLIC CHANCE TO QUESTION WASTE DISCHARGE INTO POLLOCK WATERS


Vanguard SynFuels/Allegro would discharge waste from its biodiesel plant into Little River and Big Creek, which are designated as Scenic Rivers. Their discharge would flow downstream to the drinking water intake for the Tioga and Pineville communities. Their waste would also pass through Camp Grant Walker, a Louisiana State 4-H camp.

Court Rules Against EPA on Incinerator Use
NEW ORLEANS (June 9, 2007) – The Louisiana Environmental Action Network is hailing a ruling by a federal appeals court that upholds the Clean Air Act’s most stringent rules governing air pollutants.

The decision, made by the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, means that refineries, smelters, chemical plants and other facilities that burn industrial wastes – rather than ship them off-site – must comply with the Clean Air Act.

Coalition files mercury contamination suit

NEW ORLEANS (May 8, 2007)
A coalition of local environmental groups filed a federal lawsuit against EnerVest Operating LLC, a major operator of natural gas wells in the Monroe Gas Field, to force cleanup of mercury-contaminated wetlands and other soils at gas production sites in Ouachita, Union and Morehouse parishes.
