FILES NOTICE OF VIOLATION TO EXXONMOBIL CHEMICAL

BATON ROUGE (Aug. 2, 2007) – The Louisiana Environmental Action Network, represented by the Tulane Environmental Law Clinic, has sent a Notice of Violation to ExxonMobil Chemical in Baton Rouge for violations of the Clean Air Act.
A Notice of Violation is a first step in filing a citizen enforcement suit under the Clean Air Act.  The violations documented in the notice include: exceeding the permitted emission limits; emission of unauthorized air pollutants, and failure to properly report unauthorized discharges.
“ExxonMobil should reduce emissions, adhere to the reporting requirements, and maintain the plant,” says Marylee Orr, Executive Director of LEAN.  “We are requesting that ExxonMobil take some of its record profits and put them back into the Baton Rouge facility.  This will not only reduce its emission of air pollutants, it will also help make the plant a safer work place and the Baton Rouge community a healthier place to live.”
“It is very important that these goals are achieved as soon as possible because the ExxonMobil facility is located next door to neighborhoods and has an immediate and constant impact on the entire Greater Baton Rouge area that is a nonattainment area for ozone.”  Orr said.
