Summertime Movies Are Out and You’ve Seen Them,
Now It’s Time for a Great Documentary

BATON ROUGE (August 30, 2007) – The summer of 2007 offers a fantastic choice of documentaries, including some that deal specifically with the Gulf Coast, according to the state’s oldest environmental organization.
“I hope you saw all the movies you wanted this summer, and didn’t forget about the documentary,” says Marylee Orr, executive director of the Louisiana Environmental Action Network. “In fact, considering what we’ve been through the past couple of years, there might be more action and drama in the documentaries than in the big productions that typically are released at this time of year.”
Orr recommends two films in particular because the subject matter is Louisiana – Spike Lee’s When the Levees Broke, and Hurricane on the Bayou narrated by Meryl Streep. Both are now available for rental.
“Hurricane on the Bayou explores the culture and environment of Louisiana before and after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina,” says Orr. “It looks at a group of New Orleans musicians whose lives were changed forever and it also includes a report on Louisiana's vanishing wetlands. It has stunning cinematography.” The film originally was created for exhibition in IMAX theaters.
“When the Levees Broke is an epic that commemorates the people of New Orleans,” says Orr. “It doesn't just recount the events of Katrina but asks why they unfolded the way they did. It uses interviews, news footage and amateur video to document the voices of those who were left behind. It’s very powerful.”
Orr also recommends four other documentaries.
An Inconvenient Truth – In this Oscar-winning documentary, Former Vice President Al Gore lays out the facts of global warming without getting political.

Who Killed the Electric Car? – This documentary delves into the short life of the GM EV1 electric car -- once all the rage in the mid-1990s and now fallen by the roadside.

A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash – This film examines the world's dependency on oil and the impending chaos that could occur when the resource is depleted. Through interviews, the film spells out the challenge we face and underscores our need for alternative energy.

March of the Penguins – The product of more than a year of filming in the brutal Antarctic, this Oscar-winning Best Documentary presents never-before-captured footage of the life of the emperor penguin.

“The good news is that all are available for rental, so you can see them in the privacy of your own living rooms. This way even those closet environmentalists can get their movie fix,” laughs Orr. “However, they focus on serious issues and we need to pay attention to their messages and learn. Everyone in this state should view these films.”
