Ella

Parish: Iberville Parish

The small community of Ella was bought out to make way for the construction of SNF Flopam on Point Pleasant in Iberville Parish. The former residential properties are now a parking lot. Up and down Louisiana’s River Road, small communities exist at the edges of large tracts of land. These communities often represent descendants of freed slaves that settled on the outskirts of the vast plantations they once labored on. As these plantation tracts evolve from agriculture to heavy industrial manufacturing the neighboring communities often become impacted by pollution and other quality of life issues. These conflicts have led to "buy-out's" and the complete displacement of many communities in Louisiana.

Community Gallery

This atlas is a working document developed by community members in partnership with LEAN as they work toward resolving the challenges they face. This content is under construction and continues to be refined as new data is compiled and community situations evolve. Please excuse any errors or omissions. It is our hope that documentation of these struggles allows a greater opportunity to learn from them and, ultimately, to improve the lives of residents across Louisiana who face these significant challenges.
