An oil reclamation facility, Thermaldyne, recently began operating in Port Allen. Residents voiced significant opposition during the hearing and comment process regarding potential pollution as well as an unclear notice(s) and input process. This concern was recently substantiated by a court ruling requiring LDEQ to redo the notice process for Thermaldyne’s water permit. Residents have strongly expressed opposition to the hazardous material the facility plans to receive from being transported, stored, and processed in their community. This is especially true considering the unique “pilot” process the facility is requesting DEQ approval for, that will decrease oversight and increase the potential for hazardous pollution. LDEQ recently approved the facilities request for a Verified Reclamation Facility conditional exclusion and variance. Residents are working to prevent an increase of hazardous material in their community and reduce the risks posed on their environment.
