Parish: St. James Parish

The community of Romeville is approximately 1 mile from the proposed location of Wanhua Chemical(abandoned 2019) which will handle highly toxic materials. Romeville is currently approximately 1 mile from Nucor to the northwest, Occidental Chemical to the east and South Louisiana Methanol to the south across the Mississippi River. The continued industrialization of this area without adequate consideration for area residents is in conflict with the goals set forth in the St James Parish Comprehensive Plan 2031 which includes: Land Use Goals and Objectives Goal 1: Reduce the potential for land use conflicts between residential and industrial uses.(pg. 32). Like other areas of St. James, residents have expressed concern over existing impacts from surrounding facilities, future impacts from proposed facilities and a lack of local control in those environmental decisions that may affect them.

This atlas is a working document developed by community members in partnership with LEAN as they work toward resolving the challenges they face. This content is under construction and continues to be refined as new data is compiled and community situations evolve. Please excuse any errors or omissions. It is our hope that documentation of these struggles allows a greater opportunity to learn from them and, ultimately, to improve the lives of residents across Louisiana who face these significant challenges.
