Gerry Ardoin of Iowa, Louisiana, challenged local and state public officials and one of the most powerful landowners in Calcasieu Parish—and won. After a six-and-a half year fight, and only $3,000.00, she stopped Western Waste, a major corporation from building a municipal solid waste landfill, five hundred feet from her retirement home. Gerry formed the environmental club Iowans for a Clean Environment (ICE). She also worked on various other environmental issues in Calcasieu Parish.
